Abstract

«We wish you much success with this Turk». Migros as an actor in rural development in 1960s Switzerland and Turkey In the postwar era, the Swiss Migros chain was far more than just a supermarket. Following the ideas of its founder Gottlieb Duttweiler, the company was involved in various social and economic areas that were undergoing changes - both in Switzerland and abroad. Like hardly any other company during the Cold War, it was engaged in the interface between structural development and new political discourses; these have barely been addressed by historiography. This article focuses particularly on the connection between migration policy and economic development discourses at the heart of the Migros program to recruit Turkish agricultural workers. Due to the company's involvement, which began already in the early 1950s and was primarily legitimized in terms of economic development, Migros had a particularly close, direct contact with Turkey. A specially developed internship program enabled young Turkish farmers to gain experience in Switzerland. The history of this program clearly shows the connections between the new development aid complex, the structural agricultural and migration policies of the 1960s, and the key economic policy principles underlying new consumption programs. A large body of sources, mainly from the Migros archives, also shows how divergent the expectations for such a program were on the Turkish and Swiss sides.
