Abstract

As asked by the subcommittee 'Environmental concerns' at SC 68a we here present a paper summarising the potential mitigation measures for reducing exposure of cetaceans to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in particular and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in general. Firstly, a brief summary on the environmental occurrence, the exposure situation of cetaceans and some remarks on the effects of POPS on cetceans is given. Secondly, suggestions to prevent and control the exposure of cetaceans to POPs and approaches to reduce the risks associated with POP pollution in our environment are listed. In conclusion, we are convinced that the only realistic and sustainable answer is a reduction in usage of hazardous compounds.
