Abstract

The fluorescent protein eYFP at the interface of glass fibers and an epoxy resin is able to report micron-scale damage, such as fiber fractures and fiber-matrix debonding, by loss of yellow fluorescence in the damaged areas due to a force-induced unfolding of the protein. These findings suggest that fluorescent proteins are useful probes in material science that could be used to monitor stress distributions, damage propagation and structural integrity of samples under load or after impact.
