Abstract

The recent advances in the experimental investigation of double pion photoproduction reactions in particular at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz are reviewed. Special emphasis is given to the energy range covering the so called second resonance region with the P-11(1440), the D-13(1520) and the S-11(1535) resonances. In this range all possible double pion isospin channels from the nucleon have now been measured which has largely enhanced our understanding of this reaction. In addition to the results from the nucleon first preliminary results for 2 pi degrees-photoproduction from heavy nuclei are reported.
