Abstract
The importance of subplate neurons in controlling multiple steps of cortex development was recognized more than a decade ago. However, knowledge of the precise function of subplate neurons in the establishment of cortical circuitry has been missing. A recent study has now started to dissect the functional and molecular mechanisms underlying the generation of transient neuronal circuitry in the visual cortex.
