Abstract
The thesis contributes to studies on punctuation in contemporary Italian by delving into two punctuation marks that are poorly codified and often overlooked, namely double dashes and single dashes, and by proposing a description and textual analysis based on their usage in recent functional texts. The analysis is grounded in the communicative-textual conception of punctuation, which views punctuation as a tool for text segmentation and hierarchy. The textual analysis is complemented by a historical exploration of the codification of double dashes and single dashes and by a with a comparison with punctuation in other languages, particularly English.
The first three chapters provide an overview of the topic and the history of the codification. The two central chapters contain the textual analysis of double dashes and single dashes, considering the two punctuation marks separately and highlighting their specificities. The final two chapters are dedicated to a comparison with other languages and to concluding observations, which include recommendations for practical applications of the research.
