Abstract
In today's society, many individuals perceive high levels of chronic stress. The present chapter shows that physically active individuals perceive less stress, and that regular physical activity protects against stress-related health impairments. This finding can be explained with cognitive, affective, behavioural, and physiological mechanisms. While the role of cognitive and behavioural factors are not well understood yet, research regarding the impact of physical exercise on the physiological stress reactivity has provided conflicting findings. Nevertheless, studies consistently show that physical activity performed immediately before a psychological stressor task is associated with a blunted physiological response. Practical implications are discussed based on the empirical evidence. The following key questions are addressed: Which activities are best suited for stress management? How much exercise is needed to achieve a positive effect on an individual's capacity to cope with stress? How can individuals be empowered to maintain a physically active lifestyle even if they are exposed to high stress?
