Abstract
Microblogging is a social networking service that offers the functionality of posting short textual and multimedia updates on a public profile, or "timeline," in reverse chronological order. At the moment microblogging is synonymous with Twitter, the most popular microblogging service by far. Launched in 2006 as a minimalistic service closely related to text messaging, Twitter has grown to a popular social network that has become an extremely influential communication medium in culture and politics. Despite the relatively minimalistic communicative means available to the users, not all of them use the medium in the same way. There are at least three types of Twitter usage practices: (1) an interactional tool, (2) microcelebrity "megaphone" practice, and (3) mundane updates about life events that add up to provide the feeling of social proprioception.
