Abstract
This essay offers a brief insight into the SIBA research project, conducted at the University of Basel between 2013 and 2018. It discusses, firstly, the methodological challenges of working with early 20th century photography from the Balkans and Anatolia, and secondly, of converting such visual research into a popular travelling exhibition which, subtly challenging official national narratives, succeeds in finding an emotional response with the public in Turkey and the Yugoslav successor states.
