Dottor Pontano e fra Pontano nella terza novella del ‘Novellino’ di Masuccio

Partendo dal presupposto che nelle sue novelle Masuccio Salernitano costruisce degli alter ego dei dedicatari, il saggio indaga il meccanismo di rispecchiamento della terza novella del Novellino dedicata all’umanista Giovanni Pontano. Invitato apparentemente nella dedica a identificarsi con il medico Rogero Campisciano, Pontano sembra tuttavia occultamente adombrato nel personaggio di fra Nicolò da Nargni. Con il frate minore Pontano condivide in effetti l’origine umbra e la padronanza del linguaggio lirico. L’ipotesi di identificazione con il religioso è confortata dal fatto che Nicolò da Nargni è personaggio letterario costruito a partire da alcuni testi giovanili di Pontano. In particolare, la novella di Masuccio appare come il risultato di una riscrittura parodica delle elegie ottava e nona degli Amores pontaniani. Starting from the assumption that Masuccio Salernitano creates alter egos of the dedicatees in his tales, the essay investigates the mechanism of reflection in Novellino ’s third tale, which is dedicated to the humanist Giovanni Pontano. Apparently invited by the dedication to identify with doctor Rogero Campisciano, Pontano seems nevertheless to be adumbrated in an unobtrusive way by the figure of the friar Nicolò da Nargni. In fact, Pontano shares the Umbrian origin and the mastery of the lyrical language with the friar. The hypothesis of the identification with the friar is supported by the fact that the literary character of Nicolò da Nargni is created on the basis of some Pontano’s early texts. More specifically, Masuccio’s tale seems to be the result of a parodic rewriting of the eighth and ninth elegies of Pontano’s Amores.
