Since ancient times, travel souvenirs have been produced serially and in big amounts. They are well-known, largely standardized, with a unique character, yet hard to theorize. From a design perspective, they mostly lack practical functions while symbolic meanings predominate. They often and whimsically wrap their message with humour and a pinch of magic.
The role of travel souvenirs in everyday practice has been widely studied by cultural scientists while research concerning their design has been neglected. The present thesis aims at contributing to this desideratum. By analyzing swiss travel souvenirs designed and produced in the last 200 years, it combines methods and theoretical approaches from cultural anthropology, ethnography, culture and design history, and thereby searches for a path inbetween the disciplines. The study firstly examines the object category as such and its principles of order; it then investigates specific design phenomena; thirdly, it surveys the criticism on souvenir design. Research findings are presented in two different parts: in a conventional academic text on the one hand, in an easily accessible pictorial collection on the other hand.
