Abstract

Thermally induced tautomerization of the N-heteropolycyclic 1,3,8,10-tetraazaperopyrene to a Wanzlick-type carbene intermediate on a Cu(111) surface leads to covalently linked polyaromatic chains, which can be mechanically manipulated.
