Abstract

In this thesis, a cantilever-based low temperature UHV AFM with sub-picometer gap stability is introduced and used to study atomic scale energy dissipation. The result of energy dissipation measurements arise from fluctuations of the tip-surface interaction force and from positional instabilities of the atoms are presented, which shows the superior performance of the AFM.
