Abstract

In 1804, Charles de Villers (1765-1815) published an essay entitled »On the Spirit and Influence of the Reformation of Luther« which became the most widespread contemporary interpretation of the Reformation in Europe during the first half of the 19th century. It offered a modern theory of the Reformation which not only influenced Hegel and his pupils then, but remains present in some elements until today.
