Abstract

Although very distinct in other respects, Russian symbolist poet Zinaida Gippius and Bloomsbury writer Virginia Woolf shared a common interest in the topic of androgyny, an issue they both tackled at various points in their respective works. The present article suggests that in the conception of their respective theories, both writers have been influenced by the model of androgyny presented in Otto Weininger's infamous study Geschlecht und Charakter (engl. Sex and Character ) that was published in Vienna in 1903. The analysis is based on Zinaida Gippius' essay About Love [O любви] (1925) and Virginia Woolf's novel Orlando (1928).
