Abstract
This paper comments on the opening chapters (1–4) of Arno Schmidt's "Abend mit Goldrand". By identifying different hidden stages of an alchemical process, it reconstructs the creation of the physical world of this text, setting the stage for the following action. This paper argues that the various signs of a failed creation can be understand with regard to Schmidt's reception of gnosticism.
