Abstract
Human life relies on trust. Trust, however, cannot be taken for granted, as the conflict between trust and distrust inevitably lacks resolution. Trust occurs in various forms and areas, whether it be trust in other people, trust in oneself and one’s own strengths, or trust in the social and natural world. The question is whether at the heart of all forms of trust there lies a fundamental trust (existential trust or trust in God). Particular significance is ascribed in philosophy to trust in language as a medium for conveying knowledge and communicating, as well as trust in other people.
