Abstract

As narratology provides approaches to musical semantics, it was adopted by scholarship on music and gender from the beginning of the 1990 th as a method to analyze gender representation in instrumental music, - often without reflecting the theoretical preconditions neither of narratology nor gender theory. The article discusses the main alliances between musical gender studies and narratology with references to different theoretical approaches. These concern the question of subject constitution linked with the process of establishing sense. Due to the enactment-quality of music and to its isomorphism with time they deal with aspects of performance. And as the listener attracts notice as the one who activates the narrative potential of music, narratology as well gender perspectives affect historiographical questions: the »narration of music history«.
