"Religion" als diegetischer Raum : eine narratologische Analyse von Rudolf Ottos "Das Heilige"

The analysis shows how Otto designs emotional states as narrative schemes, thus suggesting them as categories both for narrative analysis and active storytelling. In this way, it is argued, Otto manages to respond to positivism's re-definition of religion as a human phenomenon: he narratively transforms human nature into something fundamentally religious. Religion, to him, is the diegetic space in which the individual as well as the society can become the protagonist of a history of salvation. (Dt.:)Angesichts der Abwesenheit von im engeren Sinne narrativen Passagen ist es dabei besonders auffällig, dass sich die Rede vom Numinosen nicht nur in explizit religionsbezogenen Disziplinen etablierte (und bisweilen gerade dort ausblieb, wo sie sich nahegelegt hätte, etwa in der frühen Religionspsychologie), sondern nachhaltiger und unaufgeregter in Disziplinen, die mit narrativen Gegenständen befasst sind. Zuerst in der volkskundlichen Erzählforschung, dann in der Literaturwissenschaft und inzwischen auch in der Filmwissenschaft wurde Ottos Terminologie als Instrumentarium zur Erzähltextanalyse eingesetzt. Es wird gezeigt, dass diese erzähltheoretische Umwendung in textstrukturellen Aspekten des Heiligen bereits angelegt ist. Rhetorisch und stilistisch der Moderne verpflichtet, bildet der Argumentationsverlauf auf eigentümliche Weise eine einfache narrative Form nach. Otto lässt den als Figur eingeführten Leser eine transformierende Reise vom Ganz Eigenen zum Ganz Anderen und zurück vollziehen. Er formuliert dies jedoch nicht als story, sondern kennzeichnet nur deren Verlauf und liefert damit die Bausteine, Geschichte und Biographie als Religionsgeschichte und religiöse Biographie nach dem Muster der supernatural tales neu zu erzählen. (Engl.:)Although the narrative seems 'strikingly absent from The Idea of the Holy' (Poland), the high poeticity and 'evocative language' of the text captured the attention of his critics. However, while the philosophical traditions received considerable attention, it has rarely been noticed that Otto, in a consequent and systematic manner, transfers stylistic elements and patterns from modern literature to the theory of religion. The Idea of the Holy is, in terms of literary history, a truly 'modern' classic. Accordingly, its impact extended theology and even the study of religion; the book became a bestseller, and 'numinous', a common category in folklore, film studies, and certain branches of literary theory. Suggesting a narratological reading of The Idea of the Holy, it is argued that the far reaching applications of the category of narrative sources are primed in the structural aspects of Otto’s argument. In the famous passage asking 'to recollect a state of intense religious arousal', Otto implements a duplication of the addressee’s function, allowing him to address the 'listener' as a character in the narrative. In the form of a guided introspection, the addressee is sent on a transforming journey from the 'ownmost' to the 'wholly other', which is then recognized as being the 'ownmost'. Although this transformation of categories does not come in the form of a narrative, it suggests the emotional states encountered on this journey as building blocks to re-narrate one's secular biography as a history of revelation.
