Abstract

A helicand in which two 2,2`-bipyridine domains are linked by a diphenylmethane spacer has been prepared. This ligand can act as a didentate N,N`-donor or as a cyclometallating C,N,N`-donor. Ruthenium complexes exhibiting both coordination modes have been prepared in designed synthetic approaches.
